Shirley Melendez Blog # 11 January 18,2019 Interest Groups and Social Movement Interest groups are organization that are well-structured and funded.   Some well-known organizations are unions such as the American Federation of Labor and Congress Industrial Organization (AFL-CIO), the largest federation of unions in the United States.   Other well-known organizations is the U.S Commerce, which is the world’s largest business organization in which they represent the interests of more than three million businesses.   Interest groups use their funds and votes to assistance the politician in winning in order to gain favor and use that favor towards their goals. Their goal can be to create policy that will benefit their agenda or preventing a policy from changing. I believe interest groups have strong connections with the government. Shirley Melendez Blog #10 January 17, 2019 The Judiciary The Judiciary Act of 1789   was an act, which created the Supreme Court.   Through the course of history, the Judiciary Act had gone through many changes, which helped resolved many matters that were deemed as unconstitutional.   The case of Marbury vs. Madison established the Judiciary Act 1803, which allowed the Supreme court to perform judicial review.   One of the many duties of the Supreme Court is to ensure presidential power operates within the parameters of the U.S. constitution, meaning that the president can’t abuse his powers since his powers are established by the constitution.   The Supreme Court having the right to the judicial review in cases, I believe is fair and had accomplished new laws and provide updated changes to “old” laws.   In the case of Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme court gave abortion rights to women.   The law allowed women the right to abortion only during their first tri

Shirley Melendez Blog # 9 January 16, 2019 The Presidency Since the birth of our nation, we have encountered good and not so good presidents. Some presidents did make changes for the people and others just made the elites wealthier.   President Franklin D. Roosevelt was president for four terms, the only president in history to be elected for four terms showing how a good president can inspire people to go out and vote.   One example that exemplifies his success as a good president is how he reduced the rate of unemployment and his New Deal Program of Relief, Recovery, and Reform helped millions of Americans to survive the Great Depression.   Another example is using his Good Neighbor Policy to counteract the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, allowing the removal U.S. forces from Latin American countries like Haiti, Cuba, and Panama.   FDR was a good president because he genuinely cared about the people.
